Vilja Gunzelmann's video work "Tarantella" tells the story of her ancestors, which is marked by colonialist guilt and the mystification of this very guilt. Colorized photographs, documents and archival material meet voices read off-camera, fragments of a poem written to mark a family celebration in the 1960s, and the alienated and dissected piece "Introduction and Tarantelle op. 43." The song refers to the ritual character of Tarantism; through the Italian folk dance, unresolved conflicts and the unprocessed past are given a form. Tracing the employees of the C. Woermann trading house, and thus a family history, the video links different periods within German colonial history and connects them into a loose narrative. The video is part of an artistic research project that will be shown as part of a solo exhibition in January 2022 at Kunstraum 53 in Hildesheim.
Vilja Gunzelmann studies cultural studies at the University of Hildesheim. In interdisciplinary works she explores personal and power-political narratives in search of aesthetic forms of experience and contemplation - in video, painting and photography. Til Waldhier studies the same subject with a focus on music. In addition to his solo musical project and his band The Tonecooks, he enjoys experimenting at the intersection of organic and electronic sounds.
